中學時讀過一首由美國詩人Robert Lee Frost寫的詩歌,The Road Not Taken。當時的我非常喜歡這首詩歌。因為中學時的成績超爛,在升學選科出現了許許多多的分岔路,家境的經濟問題我被逼放棄屬意的學校,而想入讀政府大學卻因成績的問題無法升上中六,在面對種種轉折之下,這首詩被年少輕狂的我讀了很多遍,因此除了莎翁的Sonnet 18 以外,這是我最喜歡的一首英文詩。The Road Not Taken中譯為《未走之路》。這首詩用詞簡單,就連當時是英文白痴的我也可以明白他的內容。樸實的文字卻鮮明的帶出其優美的意境,在朗讀之餘你還能用你的想像力來想像詩歌裡描述的畫面。在閱讀這首詩的時候,你會以為Robert Lee Frost想表達旅人在樹林裡遇到分岔路而躊躇不前的心情,但他實際上是想告訴我們大家,我們的人生道路是靠自己決定的,有得才有失,有捨才能得。

人生不會一路順遂,再平坦的大道也會遇上分岔或轉彎的路。而人生的路除了是一味的向前走,你還能選擇轉彎,在迷惘的時候你可以抬頭看看蔚藍的天空,你也可以低頭看看腳邊的風景,為自己提一提精神在繼續往前走。

未走之路

金色的樹林裡有兩條路岔路
可惜我不能沿著兩條路行走;
我久久地站在那分岔的地方
極目眺望其中一條路的盡頭;
直到它轉彎,消失在樹林深處。

然後我毅然踏上了另一條路,
這條路也許更值得我嚮往,
因為它荒草叢生,人跡罕至;
不過說到其冷清與荒涼,
兩條路幾乎是一模一樣。

那天早晨兩條路都鋪滿落葉,
落葉上都沒有被踩踏的痕跡。
唉,我把第一條路留給未來!
但我知道人世間阡陌縱橫,
我不知未來能否再回到那裡。

我將會一邊嘆息一邊敘說,
在某個地方,在很久很久以後;
曾有兩條小路在樹林中分手,
我選了一條人跡稀少的行走,
結果後來的一切都截然不同。

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
